OPENING OF THE REPAIR WORK OF THE MUTRIKI PORT WAVE POWER CENTRE IN GIPUZKOA

The head of the Basque Government, Patxi Lopez, has opened the plant which uses wave power from Mutriki (Gipuzkoa), the first facility in Europe that produces electrical energy with this technology. This completely new facility is a global leader which opens the door to future marine developments.

Mutriku is the first European location to boast a plant which generates and supplies energy through waves. The new facility is located in the new dike at the port and generates 296Kw of voltage. 16 air chambers have been positioned in the dike, so that when the waves reach the platform, the air is compressed in the chambers, is propelled up through the turbines and makes them rotate. When the wave falls back, the air is sucked back in which causes a spinning movement inside each turbine, which is used to move the generators and produce energy.

One of the unique points about this plant is that, being situated in the dike, it is not in contact with sea water which prevents the risk of the machinery corroding. Furthermore, this electrical production will not emit CO2 or any other type of environmentally polluting gas.

The new wave power centre will generate electricity equivalent to the amount consumed annually by 300 families.
